Topic: Buster upgrade release (and novena-next announcement)

Buster is here!

To start with, I'm super happy to announce a Buster upgrade for the Novena!
Instructions here: https://github.com/novena-next/docs/blo … grading.md
After running these you should have upgraded from Jessie (or Stretch) to Buster.
You will end up using the stock kernel and have a working user space including 3D acceleration.
All this uses my own Debian repository which will provide updates.
I've included and signed the build logs and other info at https://novena.jookia.org/_buildinfo for transparency.

If you want to try a beta kernel, instructions are there to but be ready to report bugs.
There's no reason to use it at this point but I do need testers and feedback.
You can always boot from recovery by holding USER button at boot.

My efforts to get a new kernel on the Novena have taken years as it's been a learning experience.
Strangely enough I would have never learned about kernel hacking and distro porting if not for both the Novena and the lack of updates.
It's truly been the most educational piece of hardware in my life and impressed on me deeply.

I was originally going to release a new kernel, but as it turns out there's a lot more to be done for an upgrade.
So at this point I'm announcing the 'novena-next' organization on GitHub: https://github.com/novena-next/docs/
I plan to keep the Novena ecosystem maintained indefinitely and collect useful documentation and resources.
Right now it's just me, but that's okay. smile

At the moment the only thing I have to offer is an upgrade to Buster. But I do have more stuff planned:
- A new kernel release, as a patch set for use by other distros too
- A new u-boot release, as a patch set too for use by other distros too
- A new disk image for people to use
- Support and images for BSD systems
- Mainlining changes
- Anything else that's cool I guess?

Wow! Impressive work! Seems like I should be following this forum more closely again. Where can we apply to join the novena-next organisation?

Re: Buster upgrade release (and novena-next announcement)

I'll look into it, as soon as my novena wants to boot again (RTC issue, now). Definitely interested.

Yes, need to get my Novena to boot again, then I'm going to try this.

Re: Buster upgrade release (and novena-next announcement)

Ok, tried it this afternoon. My Novena is now at Buster - thanks!
However, upgrade_4_apt.sh failed, see issue 21 https://github.com/novena-next/docs/issues/21
(fixed the link)
