Topic: RAM soldered to board

I really like novena, but why does it use a soDIMM module? As novena
is limited to 4GB, soldering the RAM to board seems better (cheaper
and easier to design and calibrate).

Also, I'd like a clam shell design, but modifying it into one could be fun.

There are a number of reasons why it has the SODIMM module.  For starters, it might be that not everyone needs 4GB of RAM, so it allows us to make last-minute decisions on how much to include in the system.  Additionally, it shields us from some of the volatility of the RAM market.  Especially at the volumes we're looking at (just a few hundred), some companies will refuse to sell us any chips because they think we're just speculators.
